A Pride flag symbolizing love and support for the LGBTQ+ community was stolen from a Smithtown home this week — the second such incident at the same address in as many years. The theft took place in the middle of Pride Month and is now under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department’s Hate Crimes Unit.
For Meghan Messina, the flag hanging outside her home isn’t just decoration — it’s a deeply personal statement of solidarity with her son, who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
“I fly my flag because it’s important to the people of the LGBTQ community and the people who love and support them,” Messina told News 12.
On Wednesday night, that flag was ripped from the family’s front yard. Video from a nearby home shows two young people riding bicycles. One appears to be holding the stolen flag before it is discarded in nearby woods.
“Get on your bike. Let’s go,” one of them is heard saying on the video before they quickly ride off.
The following day, Messina’s husband found the flag lying in the woods and brought it home. The family says a similar incident occurred last June — also during Pride Month — when another Pride flag was stolen from the same spot.
“It’s a very exposing feeling knowing they know who lives here and I don’t know who did this,” Messina said. “So in that respect it makes me a little scared.”
Despite the repeated thefts, the Messina family remains defiant. A new flag has already been hung in the same location — a visible sign that they won’t be intimidated.
“It’s a violation of our space, our property and our possessions, but I can put another one up. I can keep putting them up — and I will,” Messina said.
