Thousands of people across the country are taking to the streets to protest immigration enforcement raids – and those raids have been happening right here on Long Island.
ICE operations are causing widespread fear in Long Island communities as federal agents operate in both counties.
ICE agents were seen in several areas in Nassau with confirmed ICE-related arrests in Glen Cove. The Nassau police commissioner says they do work with the federal agency but did address concerns in the Glen Cove community, which has a 33% Hispanic population.
"We're not about separating families, we're not about going into schools or houses of worship – we are assisting immigration agents when they come out here and they are going after a bad guy," said Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
Federal agents were also seen in Suffolk County. The agency says its conducting targeted operations, but advocates told News 12 that many people in immigrant communities are still afraid to go to places like food pantries. News 12 asked Suffolk police if it is assisting ICE agents. It said it may provide traffic support.
ICE raids have triggered nationwide protests.
