Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano is on Gov. Kathy Hochul's short list for lieutenant governor, sources tell News 12's Senior Political Reporter Tara Rosenblum.
"I'm really honored that I'm being spoken about in terms of lieutenant governor," says Spano. "I'm interested. I'm honored to be considered. I would welcome joining a team that would work to replicate some of the tremendous successes we have had in New York’s third largest city."
Spano is the longest-tenured mayor in Yonkers history, serving for the last 14 years.
He says that given the opportunity, he's ready to make the move back to Albany - where he once served as a state assemblyman.
"The lieutenant governor's position is there to support the governor and the governor's agenda. I think that one thing I've shown as a mayor and any mayor would be in this great state of New York is that you need to be a good team player," Spano said to News 12's Melanie Palmer.
News 12 is told the governor's short list has no more than four or five names, including Spano.
"Mayor Spano is certainly someone that is qualified and has been a supporter of the governor for a long time. He has all the qualities that are needed for the job, and it doesn't surprise me that he is on the short list. In the end, Gov. Hochul is going to have to make the decision as to who she wants for lieutenant governor," said Jay S. Jacobs, chair of the New York State Democratic Committee.
The governor's team didn't comment Tuesday night.
News 12 has been told Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to make a decision in the next few months, even though the race isn't until next year.
