Huntington will step up patrols of its public safety officers at parks across town after a second teen-involved shooting in the last three weeks, Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth said.
Suffolk County police said a 17-year-old was stabbed in the torso during a fight at Manor Field Park around 7:15 p.m. Monday.
The male victim was taken to the hospital, treated and released.
"I saw six cars and two people on the ground," Huntington Station resident Zach Braden said. "Then two more were driving up as I was driving away."
On July 15, two teens were stabbed, including one who was critically injured, during a fight outside the annual Huntington Manor Firemen's Fair at Peter A. Nelson Park, about 2.5 miles away from Manor Field Park.
Suffolk County police have not yet said if they made any arrests in the July altercation.
"It's been a while since we've had incidents like that," Huntington resident Linda Leake said. "Every town has its period. You could have a bunch of stuff going on today and then for years, there's nothing going on."
Now, people in the community are searching for a solution.
"It's at the point now that you need someone out at all times, as long as they're allowed in the parks. You need to have someone to watch over them," Greenlawn resident Sheila Lyons said.
Smyth was not available for an interview but told News 12 in a statement:
"The violence that has occurred at Huntington Station Parks over the last few weeks is extremely concerning. As this incident is being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Department Second Precinct, we must defer all questions to them so as not to impede or interfere with their work. However, the Town of Huntington will continue to work closely with the Second Precinct to assist in any way they deem appropriate. The Town of Huntington will enhance patrols of our Public Safety officers in and around our parks and continue to work closely with local law enforcement. The safety of our community is of paramount concern to the Town and we will do everything within our power to keep our parks and public spaces a safe place for all our residents."
Tonight, as part of the broader National Night Out initiative, the Suffolk County Police Second Squad is holding its event at Manor Field Park from 4 - 7 p.m. as it works to reduce community violence.
Suffolk County Police is asking for anyone with information on the latest stabbing to call them at 631-854-8252.
