An 11-year-old was the alleged victim of a sexual abuse that took place inside the Roosevelt Field mall Tuesday evening, according to Nassau County police.
Investigators accused Riken Acharya, 21, of inappropriately touching the girl inside the Sephora at the mall just before 6 p.m.
Court records show Acharya is accused of approaching the 11-year-old girl, who was with her grandmother, and "squeezing the lower part of her backside near her legs."
The girl, who was not named in court records to protect her identity, told police the incident made her "extremely scared, uncomfortable and afraid for her safety."
Prosecutors said Acharya did not know the victim.
Officers said Acharya ran from the store but was quickly arrested nearby.
“The world we live in, we want to believe it’s a safe place because you know, generally the majority of people are good," Robbie Furman said as he was passing by the mall this morning. "It’s one or two bad people who take advantage of that.”
Nassau County police charged the Franklin Square man with first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. He pleaded not guilty to both during his arraignment in court today.
He's being held on bail.
This is the latest in a series of public safety incidents that have raised community concerns.
“Safety at the mall is very important," West Hempstead father Chase said. "A situation like that could be detrimental to their life long-term.”
“We would hope these stores have their own security systems and security guards," West Hempstead mom Jay Washington said.
Nassau County police are looking for other potential victims and ask anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
